In the early 1950’s, this was widely considered the most dangerous race of any kind in the world, ran across thousands of miles of open roads in Mexico, and was canceled in 1955 due to safety concerns – but wow, what a ride. And TAG Heuer is offering you the chance to strap a little piece of that exhilaration to your wrist.

In addition to racing stripes on the 7 inches of brushed and polished stainless steel adjustable wristband, the classically sporty Carrerra CV7A12.BA0795 has a fixed black bezel with engraved tachymeter scale, chronograph feature, and perpetual calendar to 2099. A push-button crown switches between chronograph and hour features, which are powered by Swiss-made hybrid electro-mechanical movement.

The black dial has minute markers and written numbers in increments of five (five, ten, fifteen, etc.) around the outer rim and silver-tone bars for hour markers. Both the clock hands and the hour markers have a luminescent coat that make the timepiece easy to read in low lighting. Nestled in the bottom half of the dial are two semi-circular sub-dials that measure 1/10th seconds and 1/100th seconds, their layout reminiscent of the dials on the dashboard of a car.

With a case diameter of 43 millimeter (1.69 inches), the Carrerra CV7A12.BA0795 is by no means a dainty timepiece. The stainless steel case is water resistant to 100 meters (328 feet) and protected by a solid case back and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, and the wristband is fastened by a hidden folding clasp with side push button deployment. For a sports watch, it seems fairly well adapted to be worn with formal as well as casual attire, mostly because of the clean, classy gleam of the stainless steel.

There’s not a lot else to say about this watch. If you prefer something with numeral hour markers, you probably won’t like this one. If you don’t really need the chronograph capability, maybe this is isn’t what you need. Cost is another thing to consider; the retail price of the TAG Heuer Carrera Black Dial Chronograph Tachymeter Men’s Watch CV7A12.BA0795 is $2800. While there are more expensive designer sports watches out there, that’s not exactly pocket change. But, if you like the look and practical features of it, then go for it! Whether or not you’re attracted by the race car inspiration, this is definitely an exciting choice.
